by Joe

Our home should be a reflection of ourselves, however when you are selling your home the philosophy can actually backfire. When you are looking for a home you will see many place that have unfortunate paint colors, room that are cluttered or very unusual things that can put off a buyer.

If you are about to enter the market and you are wondering about the style of your home and how it will appeal to boldcolorsbuyers here are a few home decorating trends that real estate experts have identified as turnoffs to potential buyers.

  1. Bold colors

Bad paint colors can instantly turn off a buyer and this is actually the easiest thing to fix when preparing your home to be sold. Stay away from bright colors, dated colors (such as mauve or hunter green), and metallic colors are problematic for sellers. It is instead recommended that you stay with more neutral colors and more importantly keep the color consistent throughout the home.

  1. Shiny hardware and accessories

“One of the major trends now is all about chrome, metallic, and shiny finishes,” says Veronique Perrin, real estate salesperson at Charles Rutenberg LLC in New York, NY. “I am all for these touches — I call them jewelry for your home — but it has gotten completely out of hand. I always quote Coco Chanel, who said, ‘Before you walk out the bathroom1door, check in the mirror and take one accessory off.’ Do the same for your home just before it’s time for its close-up!”

It is best to stay with the classics such as brushed nickel but use them sparingly. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. It is best to be subtle.

  1. Open bathrooms

The open concept trend has been going over board for many years. However, now the open floor plan is now extending to the open bathroom. In my opinion no one really want to shower or bathe in the middle of the bedroom.

  1. Converted rooms

To you it may make sense to turn a spare bedroom into a space that is dedicated to your favorite hobby, however the problem is that they buyer has their own ideas. In the luxury market, this is rather common to turn small spaces into conversion rooms. Sometimes this can be underwhelming and it is best to not have a converted room.

  1. Wall-to-wall carpeting

You may think that this has never gone out of style however, many buyers see this as a downside. People want to see hardwood floors. They are always in style and will work with whatever décor you decide on.

Avoiding these few trends, will help make your home more appealing and more apt to sell quickly.
