2013-sunbowlgame-helmets-300x104When Virginia Tech and UCLA accepted invitations to the 80th annual Hyundai Sun Bowl in EL Paso, the Sun Bowl Association Football Committee was excited. Both schools have a rich football history, great programs and coaches, plus a passionate fan base.  UCLA comes to El Paso revamped as a power in the Pac-12 thanks to Coach Jim Mora and Coach Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech always has his team in position to compete for ACC championships.

Walker Crowson, Sun Bowl Association President said, “We think this will be one of the most competitive and attractive games in our long and proud history, and one befitting the 80th Hyundai Sun Bowl. We look forward to hosting the Bruins and Hokies, along with their fans and alumni, and providing them with our renowned Sun Bowl hospitality”

The history of the Sun Bowl game is one that is long and impressive. The stadium is very picturesque. It is nestled between two mountains and the view itself is inspiring. Many future NFL players have played here in El Paso. Some of the greats of the game – Tony Dorsett, Barry Sanders, Don Maynard, James Lofton, Carson Palmer, LaDainian Tomlinson and more recently Jonathan Stewart, Toby Gerhart, Ryan Broyles, Victor Butler and Joey Harrington.

2013-sunbowlgame1-300x182Seven of the top 10 winingest programs have played in the Sun Bowl game and 26 college programs that have previously won national titles have also participated. The Sun Bowl game is one that is both notable and great for fans young and old to see. The game has become one of El Paso’s great national attractions.

This 2013 Hyundai Sun Bowl will mark the first meeting between these two power house schools. Along with great football and the influx of fans and alumni, come the spending dollars. It is expected that revenue generated will average between $14 million and $17 million to the El Paso economy. Last year, the Norte Dame game bought a $25 million dollar boost to the economy. Much of that was due to the fact that there is a large population of Norte Dame alumni right here in El Paso. However, the current estimates should help the area economy and give the city exposure it wants and needs.

The El Paso Hotel and Motel Association has been prepping for the extra crowds all weeks which have included plans for enough hotel employees and catering services.

The rooms are ready, the weather is great, the only thing left if to play the game.

Good Luck to the Bruins and the Hokies!!
