gored1-300x212Why Go Red? According to the American Heart Association, heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women killing approximately 1 woman every 80 seconds. There is much emphasis placed on breast cancer awareness and rightly so, however cardiac disease has become the leading killer among women. However, we can help change that statistic because 80% of cardiac and stroke event can be prevented with education and action.

There has been a movement to bring awareness to heart disease and stroke among women, largely thought of to be a man’s disease, for the last 13 years. The National Go Red Movement calls attentions to cardiovascular risk to women and encourages women to take action to decrease this risk.

Heart disease may present the same in men and women, but the warning signs are different and does not affect them all the same. It was those misconceptions and lack of information surrounding women’s heart disease that sparked a gathering of doctors who wanted to get this information out to women creating the National Go Red Day.

reddress-364x212We all know someone that has been affected by heart disease or stroke. This is something that is near and dear to my heart.   That’s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day® and Donate to Go Red For Woman. By doing so you help support educational programs to increase women’s awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.
