If you are looking for opportunities to volunteer your time, there are many organizations that need a helping hand. It is great to know that there are great organizations right here in El Paso that help serve the elderly & disabled community in particular.
Formerly known as “Christmas in April,” Rebuilding Together is a Non-Profit organization which is focused on helping the elderly and disabled preserve and revitalize their homes and communities since many are unable to do the work themselves. Along with providing safety and independence, Rebuilding Together strives to help low-income homeowners with free home modifications, weatherization, and accessibility.
Since its inception by the Junior League of El Paso in 1991, Rebuilding Together has done more than 500 homes throughout the El Paso area. One of the criteria’s that the program requires is that you must be considered low-income to be able to qualify. ALL repairs are FREE to the homeowner and all supplies are donated from various companies throughout the city.
I was very fortunate to be able to volunteer with this great organization. I also had the pleasure of meeting wonderful volunteers such as Team Red, White, and Blue (RWB). Team RWB are military soldiers and veterans who take time from their busy schedules to help their community through physical and social activity. Together, we were able to help Mrs. Chacon- an elderly woman who needed assistance to revitalize her home which is the mission of the organization.
By mid-day, Mrs. Chacon was able to enjoy her newly painted house along with a weed-free yard. She was happy Rebuliding Together was able to provide her with free services that will allow her to live in her house longer.
I encourage all of El Pasoans to take time out of their busy schedules to help those in need. I can assure you that volunteering is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences one can endure.
